LEAVENWORTH – Kansas Wesleyan Baseball completed the series sweep over the Saint Mary Spires on Saturday as the Coyotes won both ends of the doubleheader between the teams 6-0 and 3-1.
In the opener, the Coyotes put two on the board in the top of the first inning.
Niko Olson led off the game with a single and
Carter Allen followed with a double.
Garrett Garfield brought in the first run with a single and
Fernando Ruvalcaba brought in a run with a sacrifice fly.
In the second,
Logan Arndt led off the inning with a single and later scored on when he broke for home when
Coulson Riggs attempted to steal second after reaching on a fielder's choice.
Ruvalcaba drove in another run in the third when Allen walked and then scored on Ruvalcaba's ground out.
Wesleyan added two more in the fifth. Garfield led off the inning with a single, Ruvalcaba walked and
Chris Finocchario walked to load the bases. A third consecutive walk, this one to
Blake Dale brought in a run and Arndt would drive in a run with a sacrifice fly.
Garfield and Arndt had three hits each for the Coyotes.
Thalen Wright got the win allowing three hits in eight innings while striking out 11.
Riley Gwin pitched the ninth.
Saint Mary scored in the bottom of the second inning of the second game to lead 1-0 before the Coyotes took the lead in the top of the third.
Riggs led off the inning with a single followed by a walk to
Jackson Harriger. Olson's sacrifice bunt moved the runners up and Allen's 2-run single put the Coyotes up 2-1.
The score remained the same until the sixth when the Coyotes got a big insurance run. Garfield walked and pinch runner
Isaac Hawthrone scored on Finocchario's double to put the Coyotes up 3-1.
Allen had two of KWU's five hits in the game.
Wil Yamka got the win, going five innings, allowing one run on two hits while striking out six.
Daniel Turnham got his second save of the season pitching the seventh inning with two strikeouts.
Wesleyan will head to York on Tuesday for a KCAC midweek contest before hosting a weekend series with Oklahoma Wesleyan on Friday and Saturday at Dean Evans Stadium.
