HESSTON, Kan. – Kansas Wesleyan Flag Football jumped out to a 20-0 lead after a quarter and rolled to a 41-0 victory over the Hesston Larks on Wednesday at Sieber Field.
The victory moved the Coyotes to 3-0 on the season and 2-0 in the KCAC.
Much like the first meeting between the teams, it only took KWU one play to score. The only difference this time was that Hesston had a first possession which stalled at its own 36 yard line.
From there,
Chihiro Iwata found
Nyjah Green for a 36-yard touchdown pass to get the Coyotes on the board with 9:15 left in the first.
After another stalled Hesston drive the Coyotes scored on their next chance as well. Iwata hit
Aliyah Wood for an 11-yard touchdown pass and it was 14-0 Coyotes with 1:44 left in the first.
Wesleyan's defense stepped up on the next Hesston drive as Green picked off a pass at the Hesston 20 and went untouched into the endzone for the pick-6 and put the Coyotes up 20-0 with 32 seconds left in the quarter.
Hesston then took over and began a long drive all the way down to the KWU 1, but a sack by
Khylie Douglas would stop the drive on fourth down and give the ball back to the Coyotes after nearly a nine-minute drive by the Larks.
The Coyotes responded, quickly moving down the field, Iwata found Wood again, this time from four yards out with 15 seconds left in the second quarter.
Wesleyan drove to the Hesston 5 on its next drive but would stall there.
KWU stopped Hesston again on the next drive, and took over at its own 38 and moved downfield again, the big play of the drive an 18-yard pass to Green to the Hesston 12 that set up Iwata's 5-yad touchdown pass with 11:56 left in the game.
Shanya Murape scored on a 32-yard run on KWU's next drive as the Coyotes built momentum in the fourth quarter.
The Coyote defense stepped up again on the next Hesston drive, ending the drive with an interception by
Laura Hernandez Sanchez.
Neither team would score the rest of the way as the Coyotes cruised.
The Coyotes had 329 yards of total offense in the game. Iwata was 22 of 32 passing for 236 yards and four touchdowns. She also had three runs for 20 yards. Murape had three runs for 39 yards and a score.
Wesleyan's receivers were balanced as
Jazmine Whitfield,
Yui Watanabe and Wood all had four catches each. Green had three for 63 yards and
Jenise Washington had three for 25 yards.
Murape had eight flag pulls and two pass breakups. Green had two pulls, three breakups and the pick-six.
Ava Duerr had two pass breakups as well.
Wesleyan is back in action on Friday, hosting Saint Mary at 6 p.m. at Graves Family Sports Complex.
