Flag Football stop Builders 39-0

Just one day removed from its harrowing 21-20 win over No. 1 ranked Ottawa, the Kansas Wesleyan Flag Football team returned home for the first time in over a month and beat the Southwestern College Moundbuilders 39-0 at JRI Hospitality Stadium.

The Coyotes opened with the ball and marched downfield in five plays capping the drive with a 36-yard touchdown pass from Chihiro Iwata to Jazmine Whitfield with 9:43 left in the first.

After Southwestern's drive stalled and the Coyotes took over at the Moundbuilder 22-yard line, the Coyotes only needed three plays as Iwata hit Aliyah Wood for a 4-yard scoring play and the Coyotes led 12-0 with 6:54 left in the first.

Wesleyan made it 3-for-3 on scoring drives in the first as the Coyotes took over at their own 38 and went 42 yards in five plays scoring on another 4-yard play, this one to Aaliyah Young and the Coyotes led 18-0 with 2:21 left in the first.

Southwestern drove to the KWU 22 on its next drive but stalled there giving the ball back to the Coyotes. Wesleyan's next drive also stalled and Southwestern drove to the KWU 31 where their drive stalled and the punt was marked out of bounds at the KWU 2.

KWU took over there and went 78 yards in 12 plays, capping the drive with a 7-yard pass from Iwata to Wood and the PAT was good making it 25-0.

The Coyotes led 25-0 at the half.

Wesleyan used some defensive pressure in the second half. On the first drive of the third quarter, Zo Lucas picked off a Southwestern pass and returned it 28 yards for a touchdown.

On the PAT try, the pass would get intercepted, but the intercepting player from Southwestern would run out of the endzone, then lateraled to another player in the endzone who had their flag pulled in the endzone resulting in a 1-point safety for the Coyotes.

Southwestern drove to the KWU 19 on its next drive but couldn't push the ball into the endzone.

The Coyotes would cap the scoring on the next drive as Iwata found Wood again, this time from 22 yards out and the PAT was good making it 39-0.

Wesleyan's defense forced three more interceptions down the stretch and turned the Moundbuilders over on downs on its next four drives.

Wesleyan finished with 279 yards of total offense in the game.

Iwata was 25 of 32 passing for 283 yards and five touchdowns. Wood had nine receptions for 113 yards and three touchdowns, and Young had six grabs for 60 yards.

Ava Duerr had six flag pulls for the Coyotes while Khylie Douglas had five, including one sack. KWU's defense forced four interceptions, one by Lucas, one by Tomoyo Yagi and two by Laura Hernandez Sanchez.

The Coyotes are back at home on Saturday hosting William Woods University Owls at 1 p.m. at JRI Hospitality Stadium and the Graves Family Sports Complex.
