Flag Football stops Midland 39-7 in conference opener

FREMONT, Neb. – Kansas Wesleyan Flag Football moved to 2-0 on the season as the Coyotes defeated the Midland University Warriors 39-7 In Wednesday's KCAC opener for the Coyotes at Heedum Field.
 
After stopping Midland on its first drive the Coyotes pushed across on their first charge of the game. Quarterback Chihiro Iwata found Nyjah Green for an 18-yard touchdown pass to get the Coyotes on the board.
 
The Coyotes scored on their next drive as Iwata found Aliyah Wood for an 8-yard touchdown pass with 1:27 left in the first quarter.
 
Wesleyan didn't score again until right before half time as the Coyotes got the ball back with 1:25 left and would drive down and score with 47 seconds left before the half as Iwata ran it in from six yards out putting the Coyotes up 20-0.
 
The Coyotes scored to start the second half on a 26-yard pass from Iwata to Yui Watanabe with 11 minutes left in the third.
 
Wesleyan then got a turnover as Green picked off a pass and three plays later the Coyotes scored again to take a 33-0 lead with 10 minutes left in the third.
 
The Coyotes capped the scoring with a 2-yard touchdown pass from Iwata to Leila Casillan with 5:04 left in the game.
 
Iwata had another impressive performance for the Coyotes going 30 of 45 for 335 yards with five touchdowns. Iwata also added 55 yards rushing on nine attempts, adding another touchdown to the mix. KWU finished with 413 yards of total offense.
 
Shanya Murape had 21 yards rushing on three attempts. Wood led the Coyote receivers with 11 catches for 91 yards and a touchdown. Jazmine Whitfield had six catches for 96 yards and Green added seven grabs for 86 yards and two scores.
 
Ava Duerr paced the KWU defense with eight flag pulls. Samari McKinney had six and Murape had five. The Coyotes held Midland to 283 yards of offense, including minus-18 rushing.
 
KWU gets a week off before heading to Hesston to take on the Larks on March 11 at 6 p.m. It will be the second meeting between the teams this season, this match-up will be a KCAC conference match-up.
