Baseball sweeps Avila in doubleheader

Kansas Wesleyan swept both ends of Friday's doubleheader with the Avila University Eagles at Dean Evans Stadium.

The No. 20 ranked Coyotes won the first game 18-9 and the second 16-8 to win the series.

The weekend series was supposed to be played in Kansas City, but forecast inclement weather forced the series to be moved to Salina on the all-turf surface at Dean Evans.

The two wins boosted Wesleyan's record to 40-8 overall and 31-4 in the KCAC, marking the first time in school history the Coyotes have had back-to-back 40-win seasons, and KWU continues to set a new record for conference wins in a season.

The game started out with a bang for the Coyotes. Jacob Williamson led things off with a homer, one of three in the top of the first for the Coyotes two led 3-0 after an inning. Jarrett Gable and Tyler Favretto also had round-trippers in the inning.

Wesleyan added a run in the second as Alex Garcia singled and then went to third on a stolen base and throwing error. Williamson's single brought in Garcia making it 4-0.

Avila got a run in the bottom of the second, but the Coyotes got four more in the top of the third. Favretto and Reece Bishop walked and then went to third on a wild pitch. Zack Beatty followed with a 2-run single. Adrian Villalobos singled and later in the inning Kendall Foster connected on another 2-run single.

Avila answered back in the bottom of the third with five runs to make it 8-6.

Beatty drove in a run for the Coyotes in the fourth with a sacrifice fly that scored Cruz Oxford who led off the inning with a walk.

Avila tied it in the bottom of the inning at 9-9.

The score stayed deadlocked at 9-9 until the seventh when the Coyotes got it going again. Williamson led off the inning with a homer and after a single by Foster and a Gable double, Oxford launched a 3-run homer to make it 13-9. Favretto doubled and Bishop followed with a 2-run homer, leaving the Coyotes a grand slam short of the home run cycle in the inning.

The Coyotes added three more in the ninth as Villalobos led off with a homer, Garcia walked and Williamson doubled but an error on the play allowed Garcia to score all the way from first. Gable added another RBI double to make it 18-9.

Nathan Galusha got the win for the Coyotes in relief pitched two and a third innings allowing a run on a hit while striking out three after coming on in relief of starter Brett Maddock who went three and two-thirds allowing seven earned runs on six hits. Ritter Steinmann pitched two innings with three strikeouts and Cesar Rodriguez pitched an inning allowing a hit with a strikeout.

Williamson had a monster day with five hits in the game as KWU had 21 as a team. Gable had four, Villaolobos three. Williamson, Oxford and Beatty all drove in three runs each.

The Coyotes left little doubt in the second game willing 16-8.

Wesleyan powered out to a 4-0 lead in the first as Foster homered, Bishop brought in a run with a RBI groundout and Beatty had a 2-run double.

Avila got two back in the bottom of the first but the Coyotes put five on the board in the second. Garcia led off with a double and went to third on a wild pitch and then scored when Williamson struck out, but required a throw to first to complete the play, and Garcia taking off and scoring on the play.

After a single by Foster, Gable followed with a 2-run homer. Oxford singled, Favretto walked and Bishop brought in two more with a single.

Back-to-back walks to Garcia and Williamson set up Foster's 3-run homer in the third and Favretto added another homer in the inning making it 13-2.

Williamson clubbed yet another homer in the fourth, a 2-run shot to make it 15-2. Bishop's solo homer in the fifth made it 16-2.

Avila got five back in the fifth and got one more in the bottom of the seventh for the 6-8 final.

Foster added four more hits for the Coyotes and drove in four. Bishop drove in four on two hits and Gable had three hits as well.

Jarrett Brannen went four innings to get the win to improve to 10-1 on the season allowing two runs on five hits with four strikeouts.

The teams will conclude the series, and the regular season on Saturday with one game starting at 9:30 a.m. at Dean Evans Stadium.
