KANSAS CITY, Mo. - Kansas Wesleyan's Jackson Malone won the Central Plains Invitational Sept. 22-23 in Newton, Kan., one of just two players to post three rounds under par, earning NAIA Men's Golfer of the Week for Oct. 1.
Malone opened with a first-round 68 (4-under par) at Newton's Sand Creek Station, erasing his lone bogey with five birdies, three on the front nine. The senior from Frisco, Texas, was 2-under in the second round, again making five birdies to shoot 70. His final round at Sand Creek was nearly identical to the first, with five birdies and one bogey, ending the day 4-under, shooting 68 to finish the tournament 10-under par, best among a field of 42 golfers.
The Coyotes finished third in the event, four-shots behind second-place Baker (Kan.), beating conference rival Evangel (Mo.) by six strokes. As a team, KWU was 4-under par in the final round.
Kansas Wesleyan is back in action Oct. 20-21, at the KCAC Match Play Championship at Mariah Hills, in Dodge City, Kan.
NAIA Men's Golfers of the Week are named weekly, on Wednesdays at NAIA.org, through Oct. 22. The award breaks for the winter and returns March 4, weekly, through April 22.
