Coach
Jefferson Cook has sky high hopes for the Kansas Wesleyan women's golf team this spring – with good reason.
The Coyotes solidified themselves as Kansas Conference favorites this spring by winning the KCAC Match Play title in October at Dodge City's Mariah Hills Golf Court. KWU demolished York 4.5-0.5 in the semifinals and Evangel 3.5-1.5 in the championship for their third match play title in four years and fifth in the past seven.
The victory was especially sweet after the Coyotes placed second in the event in 2024.
"It was a really big confidence booster for them," said Cook, who is in his first season at KWU. "They didn't win it (in 2024) and that kind of left a bad taste in their mouth. They came back and we're looking to win this year for sure and that's what they did."
Cook expects the fall momentum to continue into 2026 with the Coyotes seeking their third consecutive conference title.
"I one hundred percent think that we're going to go out and win," he said. "I have no doubt in my mind that they are going to do everything that they can to really get a three-peat this year."
Cook is counting on the team's "three anchors" to lead the way – senior
Chaney Littell and juniors
Ryann Warren and
Savanna Nickum.
"Chaney played really well for us this last fall," Cook said. "Ryann and Savanna also played really well so those are our three anchors."
Cook also looks for
Magen Dow, a junior, to have a solid season.
"We've got a lot of talent on the women's side so really any of them can go out and compete for the highest level," he said.
Cook said Evangel will present a strong challenge in the KCAC race along with possibly Friends.
"A lot of the schools in the KCAC don't really have a full team; we're one of the few that does," he said. "Evangel is going to be up there in the competition and the conversation for conference as well."
The Coyotes begin the spring session March 23-24 at the Friends Women's Invitational at Tallgrass Country Club in Wichita. The KCAC Championship is scheduled for April 27-29 at Sand Creek Station Golf Course in Newton.
"We're just kind of locked in and I think it'll be a really good spring," Cook said.
