The 1956 and 1957 football squads won back-to-back championships for Coach Gene Bissell.  The 1956 team had an undefeated conference record (8-0) and their only loss came on the final game of the season to Southwestern.  The Coyotes outscored opponents 324-106 and placed six men on the ALL-KCAC team.  The 1957 team finished with a record of 8-1 and placed five men on the ALL-KCAC team.  The 1957 Coyotes outscored opponents 216-88 and their only defeat was a five point loss to Bethel.
