Ellis Wright played football for two seasons at Kansas Wesleyan, earning unanimous first team All-KCAC honors for the Coyotes as a defensive lineman both years. He was a 1998 Honorable Mention NAIA All-American and earned First Team NAIA All-American honors in 1999 as a senior.

"He's probably the greatest defensive lineman I've coached from the standpoint of work ethic and character," Wesleyan coach Dave Dallas said about Wright in 1999. "And he's a great person on top of it. He was fantastic."

In his senior year, Wright had 130 tackles, 85 of them solo stops and 31 for loss in only nine games. He also had 17 sacks, 52 quarterback hurries and forced seven fumbles, recovering four of them. He returned one for a touchdown. Wesleyan's defense finished third in the NAIA in total defense that year as well.

In addition to his football career at KWU, Wright also was on the KWU Track and Field team and was a member of the KWU cheerleading squad.
