Swede served as college professor, coach, athletic director, dean of students, and admissions counselor at KWU.  Swede’s teams won 76 games at KWU, including the 1954 KCAC Championship. A former professional baseball player with the Yankee farm system, Coach Backstrom came to KWU following a high school coaching assignment that won four championships in Michigan.  He was a standout athlete and coach at Drew University for both the baseball, and basketball teams.
