Coach of all sports and Athletic Director, Coach Johnson’s fire department basketball led KWU to three KCAC Championships, one second and one third. His overall record was 85-33. Martin Stadium was constructed while Gene was Athletic Director. Coach Johnson came to KWU from Wichita State University where he still ranks as the third winningest coach. Gene was coach of the United States Olympic Champions of 1936. His McPherson Globe Oilers won the 1934 National Championship and finished second in 1935. His Kansas Wesleyan football team won the KCAC in 1940.
