Steve was a four year letterman in baseball for Coaches Ken Cochran, Fred Reed, and Dave Fancher. Steve hit .481 in 1972, a top ten mark in the NAIA. He was All-KCAC and NAIA All-District 10 as a third baseman. The Coyotes won the KCAC in 1972
