Carroll captained the 1923 squad. He was recognized by being named Honorable Mention All-State. It is said that he had an eagle eye for shots and that his shots from very difficult angles thrilled many crowds. Referring to his many wins against Bethany College, someone once called him, “A real fighting coyote on the basketball five, fond of Swede meat.” He was a three-year letterman.
