Don was a four year letterman in basketball and track. He started all four years in basketball and led the KCAC in scoring as a junior. He was twice selected First Team All-KCAC in 1950 and 1951. The 1950 KCAC Champions went 22-2 and advanced to the NAIB National Finals beating Fort Hays State twice in the District Playoffs. In track Don earned his four letters as a high jumper.
